Triple-A-COAT project reaches end of year 1

The Triple-A-COAT project has now reached the end of its first year!
Project partners met together at EAWAG in Zurich, September 13th-14th 2023, hosted by our Swiss partner SuSoS AG.
Triple-A-COAT is working with 3 types of nanocellulose, and several different approaches for antimicrobial functionalisation and coating adhesion to surfaces. This gives us many different parameters to play with, so we can develop the best performing antimicrobial coatings for different applications and surfaces.
This first year of work, mainly in WP1 and WP2 has included:
- setting up the methodologies for testing of antimicrobial activity of nanocellulose, and coating quality
- exploring approaches for chemical or physical binding of antimicrobial compounds to nanocellulose, and improving the adhesion of nanocellulose to different surfaces
- testing our three types of nanocellulose for antimicrobial/antiviral activity and coating properties, including already some tests of functionalised nanocellulose
Our schedule in Zurich included a public Workshop on Nanocellulose, organised by Triple-A-COAT and our local Zurich partners, where four Triple-A-COAT partners explained about their previous work on nanocellulose and antimicrobial technologies.
Our time in Zurich also included a visit to SuSoS, where we learnt about their work on functional coatings, and took a tour of their labs and clean room facility.
